Crocheted Flowers

**Edited: Had some questions on what size crochet hook I used. I used a size 3 crochet hook.

This is what I've been doing. I took several skeins of embroidery floss with me yesterday when we took Benjamin to take his ACT test (not quite 1.5 hrs one way). I made lots more than this, but these are the PaperTrey Ink colors that Nichole shared on her blog. These aren't made with her pattern but my friend Melissa's.

Double challenge

This card was made using this week's sketch challenge #232 on SCS and Dare U 2 Digi Stamp's challenge of brown and orange using a digital image. My image is one that I won in blog candy from The Coconut Shack called Honey Bear. Inside the card I printed from the computer "what's the latest buzz". Ü

I hand stitched on the swirl image above the bear with embroidery floss as well as made French knots in the center of the flowers. Glitter is added to the bee's wings. Paper is some that was in my stash.

Felt Flowers

I have quite a bit of felt from my bear and bunny making days (the felt was used for their jackets) and decided to cut a bunch of flowers. I used a SU! die as well as my flower Cuttlebug die to make these two cards. I'm also trying to use scraps of paper I have in a file as it is getting way to thick.

Clean and Simple

This has to be one of the hardest "techniques" for me to do when it comes to stamping. This weeks CAS (Clean And Simple) challenges on SCS was to use pink/coral, kraft and one other color. I chose a pretty aqua blue.

As soon as I saw Nichole post about crocheting flowers I knew I wanted to try. Then my friend Melissa posted an even simpler one and that "hooked" me (heehee, you will only get that if you crochet). Well, it took a few tries to get one to look right, but I finally did it.

Crocheting with embroidery floss (Nichole's idea) is a great idea, but was kinda tricky until I got the hang of it. It's been quite awhile since I've crocheted.

Okay, so here is my Clean and Simple card with a crocheted flower using embroidery floss and also a felt flower cut with a Cuttlebug die. Sentiment is from the Paper Tray set by PTI. Kraft cardstock is also by PaperTrey Ink. Polka dot paper i retired Groovy Guava from SU! and button is Basic Grey.

Whimsie Doodles

I just found one of the cutest new digi sites called Whimsie Doodles. She even has this free digi image to play with (you can find it in the right column on her blog). I normally like to find the paper I'm going to use and then match the colors to it, but this time I colored the image and then got very lucky to find this paper in my stash to match!

The paper is by Scenic Route and is actually Halloween paper! I'm not a big Halloween person, but loved the colors in it and bought it for that reason. This piece is called Salem Scrap Strip and the stripes were perfect for the colors I used in my turtle.

I added Crystal Effects to the flower and spots on the turtle. She is colored with Gamsol and colored pencils. Added photo corners with SU! punch and some ribbon to finish it off.

Father's Day projects

Today I have two projects to share with you. One is for PaperTemptress and is a wallet card. This was inspired by one Nichole made last year. I love the leather looking cardstock PaperTemptress carries and remembered the wallet Nichole had done and knew I wanted to make one. For mine I just cut the cardstock ~Gray Leather (sponged with Storage Units, Ink & More's Cream of Wheat ink) and Hot Fudge 4.5" x 11" and sewed them together (AFTER I had sewn around the edges of a small piece for the inside). The sticker on the front is Basic Grey's embossed sitckers by K & Co. I am going to insert a gift card for my dad on the inside. "Happy Father's Day" is by Art Gone Wild.

My second project is using Lizzie Anne Designs digi paper from Garden Inspirations (I just cut the brown part of the striped paper to keep it monochromatic) and the solid brown is also from the Garden Inspiration digi set. I don't have the best printer and when it prints solids it makes it stripe looking. But it looked kinda cool like a faint tone on tone stripe.

The stamps I used are Happy Father's Day single and stars from In the Background. I used Nestibilities Label Two dies. Brads finished it off.

Krafty Raspberry Chocolate Cream

When I saw this color challenge on Dawn's blog, I knew I wanted to play. I was busy last week getting the boys' rooms ready, so didn't get to stamp til yesterday.

The challenge is already over, but I still wanted to make a card using these colors. I was inspired by a layout I had seen in a CTMH catalog. Papers are PaperTrey Ink and stamps are SU!

My Boys are HOME!

YAY!!! My boys are back! We picked them up Saturday. It seems to take Benjamin time to transition back. We are slowly hearing stories of his two weeks in AK and I have some pictures that I will share with you a little at a time this week.

Aaron had fun helping with Bible School and I hear he is quite the actor. LOL!! He's always been melodramatic, so I believe it. Ü

When the boys are gone for a few days and come home, I make their favorite foods and usually a special dessert. This is the dessert I made and it was YUMMY! They both loved it. The only things I did different was I didn't divide the chocolate pudding powder. I added 2 cups milk to all of it. I also used crushed Butterfingers instead of Heath bars because I knew the boys both liked Butterfingers. They also loved the goodie baskets on their dressers.

For the main dish I made the easiest French Dip my friend Gloria shared with me...

one dry pkg Italian Dressing (found in the salad dressing section)

one dry pkg AuJus mix
1 can beef boullion (or French Onion soup)
2 large chuck steaks

Add it all to the crock pot and cook til done. I put it in at 7:30 am on high and it was done at 11:30.

I also like to cook a thinly sliced onion in butter until done and put on toasted buns (butter bun and fry in pan until golden brown) with the yummy meat.

Aaron's favorite....

Golden Carrot Buns

4 c cooked sliced carrots (I use our canned carrots)
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup warm water (110* to 115*), divided
2 pkgs (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
3/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon molasses
2 teaspoons salt
8 1/2-9 cups all-purpose flour

Place carrots in a blender or food processor. Add eggs and 1/2 cup water; puree until smooth. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in remaining water. Add carrot mixture. Stir in oil, sugar, mollasses, salt and 5 cups flour; beat until smooth.

Add enough remaining flour to foram a soft dough. Turn onto a floured board; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.

Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down.

Shape into roll. Place 2" apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until almost doubled, about 1 hour.

Bake at 350* for 18-20 minutes or until browned.

Butttons and Ribbon

That is our challenge from our hostess Vicki this week's CSAYL. I sat upstairs at my desk totally blank as to what to do and then it hit me to make the buttons be "ornaments" and the ribbon the string from which they hang. I love how it turned out.

The paper isn't even Christmas paper (Marrakech line by Basic Grey), but reminds me of snowflakes softly falling for some reason. (might have to do with the after effects of a severe migraine I had yesterday and I was delerious LOL)

I didn't want the sentiment to take over the ribbon and buttons, so stamped it on the solid green (from the same paper pack) to be muted somewhat.

The ribbon is SU!'s Mellow Moss taffeta that I rec'd in some blog candy and I love the soft sheen to it. It is so wonderful to work with. I sewed the buttons (also Basic Grey) on with SU! Linen Thread.

**tip #1: when sewing on buttons to paper, don't make a knot to the back. tape the end (beginning and ending) down to keep it from coming undone. This keeps a "bump" from the knot showing thru your paper

**tip #2: thread a long piece of linen thread, embroidery floss etc. This way you can use it for several projects before running out. (I keep my threaded needles in a Altoid tin)

National Doughnut Day!

I'll share the history of this important holiday in a minute.

I'm popping in to say I'll be back soon. Both boys come home tomorrow~ Benjamin from AK and Aaron from staying in town all week with my in-laws while he helped with Bible School. Bruce helped me Wed clean Benjamin's room and will do the windows today and yesterday after I got home from my dr. appt. I started tackling Aaron's room. Benjamin's was just VERY dusty and had little to do but it's a large room (both boy's rooms are~ in fact larger than DH & mine). I need to get Aaron's finished and he is a pack rat. I got half done and then was sneezing so much decided I better take a break, so am back to finishing today.

While in Grand Island yesterday, I bought the boys' favorite treats and am going to fix up a little gift basket for each of them, plus make some "welcome home" banners. I have to get all their bedding washed and hung on the line so it will feel and smell fresh and be ready for them both to crash when they get home. Ü

I will also be doing lots of baking, breads, cookies, snacks etc to be ready for them as well. Aaron loves carrot bread (a yeast bread you make with mashed carrots, recipe will be posted later), so need to get that done.

I have some cards made, just not photo'd cuz it takes so long! Since I'm using Aaron's camera and his stuff is not downloaded on our computer, I have to take the pics with his camera, take the card and batteries out and put them in a broken screen camera, then put on the computer. If they don't look good, I go back and take the batteries and card out of the broken camera and put back into Aaron's and back and forth. Confused?? Ü

I hope I will be able to be more consistent posting every day after Benjamin gets home since I will have my camera back. I do have to chuckle as I rec'd a notification that someone unsubbed from my blog because I post too much. LOL!!

Okay, now on to your National Doughnut (or donut) Day history lesson according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"In honor of National Doughnut Day, Doughboys and Engineers (started by Todd Oliver) are being offered free doughnuts. On National Doughnut Day, look to see if your local doughnut shop, or other organizations, are offering free doughnuts to solicit donations for the Salvation Army or for another needy cause. If you find them, please be generous."

"National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a "donut") — an edible, ring-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops[1] and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States."

"National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers behind the front lines in France.
Soon after the US entrance into WWI in 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service, would serve the needs of US enlisted men. Six staff members per hut should include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys.
(The canteens/social centres that were established by the Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers were called "huts".)
About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly-baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."
A legend has spread that the provision of doughnuts to US enlisted men in WWI is the origin of the term doughboy to describe US infantry, but the term was in use as early as the Mexican-American War of 1846-47."

So, there you have it...go eat a donut today.

20 and counting

no not Christmas cards (yet), but years DH & I've been married. Today is our anniversary and we have truly been blessed. We have two wonderful (remind me I said this when they are fighting) boys. Benjamin will be 17 (yikes!!) in Aug and Aaron is 14.

Lots of Lizzie Anne

Today I have some fun goodies to share with you. The first project is for LAD's POTM or Project of the Month. The DT takes turn with each 3 month release to share a fun project for you to try. I am hooked on toilet paper tube projects and that is what I am sharing with you this month. TP Lifesaver Treat Instructions:
stamps: LAD Lifesaver Single
paper: digi LAD Swanky Stripes
ink: Memento Black and pink
other: markers, brads, cello bag, toilet paper roll, candy, ribbon, Tombow adhesive, photo corner punch

1. Print pink and green stripes on white. Then cut to 8.5" square and run thru printer turning once to make a plaid pattern. Opt: Sponge edges with ink. Cool huh? Ü
2. Wrap plaid around toilet paper tube as shown. (sizes will vary with brands, but my pink is cut 4.25" x 6" and 2" x 6")
3. Cut ribbon to 6" and adhere.
4. Ink girl only and stamp and color.
5. Ink sentiment only and cut into a tag. Brush edges with ink.
6. Adhere girl to front of covered tube.
7. Add 3 brads, attaching the tag to bottom brad.
8. Punch photo corner and adhere to top left corner.
9. Fill cello bag with candy and tie with ribbon.
10. Insert cello bag inside toilet paper roll with ribbon showing

The next fun project I have to show you is using this month's new stamp single release called Sparklers and new digi print Stars and Stripes. There is also another single released and I will show that one tomorrow. I love all things Americana (maybe it has to do with my bd being the 6th of July, I don't know) and was so excited when LAD released these singles and digi prints.
I cut the stripe paper 3.25" x 3.5" and wrapped it around a roll of lifesavers. (this is not my idea. it is one I saw last year and saved the idea in my notes to make)
Then I poked a hole in the top and added the fun sparkly stars. For those that live here, it comes from Alco. Because the stars were so sparkly, I added glitter on the star stripes and also on the sparklers on the card.
The ribbon on the card is some that I picked up a couple of years ago in the dollar section at Target. I couldn't believe how perfect it matched the digi paper!

On a personal note, it is VERY quiet here! Ü Benjamin is still in AK (coming home Saturday) and Aaron is spending the week in town helping with Bible School.
I wish I could say I'm getting a LOT done, but yesterday had a pneumonia shot (plan one of trying to keep me from getting sick) and apparently (if you can believe what you read on the internet) less than 1% have a reaction and that reaction is for your muscles to hurt all over. Well you guessed it!!! I hit that "less than 1%". This is a new kind of pain for me, but if it keeps me from getting sick all the time, it will be worth it.
I see the dr. from Omaha again Thursday and they will explain to me all my test results. They sent a letter, but it was all gobbly gook to me. All I understood is that there is damage to one lung (from all the pleurisy I'm guessing) and they will discuss what I'm to do at my appt. One thing I do know is that Singulair is a waste of my money. It hasn't helped a bit and I hope that I don't have to take anymore. OTC meds work better than it does, but he wanted me to take it until June to see if it helped.

19 and counting

This is week 19 for Christmas Stampin All Year Long. Sankari is our host this week. I love her sketch AND challenge, but I'm not happy with my card. It looked much better in my head. Ü Our challenge was to use numbers, so the first thing I thought of were these sheets I had embossed with a friend's number Cuttlebug folder. We were also given this sketch if we wanted one and I loved the sketch, so gave it a try.

I need to get Aaron off to Bible School this week (he is staying in town for the week), so maybe I will play around with it and see if I can make it better. Father's Day Card

I made this card using Kendra's sketch on LAD. It is a 4.5 square card. I stamped one of the birds in the Bless This Nest set and on the inside stamped the Father Saying. The plaid pattern is also LAD! Bet you are wondering where that is on Lizzie Anne Designs huh? Ü Well, I changed the color of the Swanky Stripes blue to a more turquoise and then cut it at 8.5 square and ran it thru my printer again (be sure to turn it so the stripes print the opposite way) to make a plaid. Cool huh? I have another fun project to show you later for LAD's POTM for June and it uses some fun plaids as well.

You Are My Inspiration

I love how this turned out. I used scraps that I had laying around and actually like something that I put flowers on! I love cards that I receive that have primas, silk or other flowers on them, but for some reason when I try it, it looks tacky. I really like how this turned out.

Papers are K & Company and textured orange that I picked up awhile back at the LSS. Stamp for the front of the card is from Lizzie Anne Designs Garden Inspiration set and for the inside is from their Say It In Script set. I love the fonts and how you can mix and match the verses in the sets. I used SU's corner punch and Pumpkin Pie & Rose Red ink pads. The flowers are from a Hydrangea stem from Hobby Lobby that I took apart. The flower behind the silk is punched from a 5 petal punch. Brads are from my stash.

Cupcake Sack

OOPS! I forgot to make this go live. This cupcake sack is the inspiration of Cookiestamper. You can find the instructions here. I used SU! patterned paper that I won in blog candy awhile back.

I had to enlarge it to fit my little lunch sack. By enlarging I just used larger circle punches for the sides and "cherry". I also did the handle different (didn't make a knot as in the instructions) and you can see on this side view where I threaded the end thru the whole and then used a glue dot to hold together.

Here is another one I made and used Lizzie Anne Designs Digi prints Sweets & Treats. I used SU! ribbon and like how the ribbon looks on the front.

Today is Joy's birthday and several of us are surprising her with birthday cards playing with some new images that will be available Friday. These sea turtles are her favorite images and I can see why! They are adorable! The new Our Craft Lounge stamps set is called Hangin' Loose with Kona. It is an eP exclusive and you can purchase it on line this Friday!

I forgot to post this Monday. This is a card I made for Memorial Day as a thank you to those who serve our country. I designed this card CASEing Mercy on SCS for the Sunday Featured Stamper.

Lizzie Anne meets PaperTemptress

I am a guest designer for 2 months for The PaperTemptress. Not only am I, but Aaron too! Ü Make sure to check their blog and store as she has some very pretty papers! For my card I used Sweet Tooth (white), Blue Raspberry (lighter blue) and Teal Felt Grandee. The Teal Felt has this really cool texture. It is a heavy cardstock and would be perfect for those papercrafting projects where you need more weight. I love how SU!'s Taken with Teal ink matched it perfectly!

My bird is from Lizzie Anne Design's new Bless This Nest set and the sentiment is from In the Treetop. I also used Cuttlebug's Textile Texture embossing folder from eclectic Paperie on the Blue Raspberry paper and then sponged over it with SU!'s Taken with Teal. I think this is my favorite embossing folder. It reminds me of an old tin tile. I added some lace and ribbon to finish it off.

Aaron's card uses Sweet Tooth (white), Black Licorice, Lemon Drop (dark yellow) and Banana Split (click on the color names and it will take you right to the paper in the store). He used Lizzie Anne Design's "Loads of Fun" single, Cuttlebug's Spots & Dots from eclectic Paperie, SU! black marker and Summer Sun ink and used SCS's sketch challenge #19 to make his card. He colored the circles that he thought looked like wheels with a black marker. Didn't he do an awesome job?

One and a half dozen

This week's challenges for CSAYL is a sketch challenge by Maria. A circle just didn't work with this image, so I placed the knot in the ribbon under the image for my circle.

I love this image by Darcie's. Since this is Memorial Day, I had to have a card with stars and I love how this looks like an Americana Christmas card.

Joining this group has been great not only to get cards done in advance, but a great way to get all those Christmas papers used up! I used Basic Grey for this card and have LOTS of papers left to keep making cards every week.

Round Top Cupcake Box

Here is another project we did on Saturday. This round top box was technique challenge on SCS. Click here to get the pattern and instructions.

Cupcake

This past weekend I taught a cupcake themed class.

This card is made using paper and ribbon from Hobby Lobby, Nestibilites dies and Inkadinado's Birthday Cupcake stamp set. I colored the cupcake with Gamsol and colored pencils.

I will share the other projects later as I haven't had time to photo them yet. I have lots to share that I've been working on, I just need to find the time to photo them.

CSAYL #17

Rock Star

Today I am featured on Lizzie Anne Designs blog as their Rock Star. Ü

The card I am showing you today using two of their stamp sets: Garden Inspirations and Everyday Sayings. I also used their digi papers Garden Inspirations.

I changed the colors of the digi papers in my Microsoft Picture It! Premium 10 editing program. Here is how I did it:

click "effects", then click "antique", click "touch up", then "auto exposure". Click effects again, then "change hue". There is a color wheel there and you can change the color to anything you like. I then saved it as I liked this color and want to be able to use it again. Have I mentioned what a bargain these paper packs are at $2.99??!! Ü

Thank you chicks

I had so much fun making this card! The chick is from "Bless This Nest" set. I added some fun flock to make them look even more real. They look just like the little chicks we get each spring.

See the flower and polka dot paper? That is from Lizzie Anne Designs digi paper "Garden Inspirations". I use Microsoft Picture It! Premium 10 to edit. There is an option that says "effects" and I clicked on "black and white" and then clicked "touch up" and "exposure" and got this really cool looking paper. The paper packs sell for only $2.99! With so many options and being able to print at home, this is the best bargain. Check back tomorrow to see what else I've done with these digi papers.

Cupcake Joy

Today is week 16 for Christmas Stampin All Year Long. This week Vicki of Summerthyme Studio is our hostess. Vicki's challenge was to add "zing with Christmas bling" to our cards. Maria included this sketch for those who need a sketch to follow. I did not follow the sketch, but did add some "zing" in the form of glitter, Crystal Effects (on the cherries) and some red pearls that look like cherries to me. I used TreeHouse Stamps "Christmas Cupcake" again. I had stamped a bunch of them off, so hope you all aren't tired of seeing this stamp. It's on sale right now for $7! What a bargain. "Joy" is from a discontinued SU! set.

Very busy blogger and one proud mama

I've been a bad blogger, but life has just been too busy this week. We had something on the calendar every day/night this week. I did decide to come home on Monday and not attend the Senior Slide Show. I hate that I missed it, but I had to be home SOME time this week. Ü

Tuesday was Wall of Fame Induction and Benjamin received two honors. He received a Spirit Scholar award. This award goes to those students who have a 3.0 GPA and above AND show Character, Responsibility, Compassion and Respect. Benjamin has a 4.0 and we are very proud of him. He also received the All Academic Southwest Conference award for his accomplishments as an athlete and high GPA.

Wednesday was the Baccalaureate for the Seniors, Thursday: Fine Arts Banquet (he was the only one to receive a 2 yr pin for Spanish Club and his involvement with there and today a track meet. The 4 x 800 team placed first. Next week is going to be tough as they have to place 1st or 2nd in order to qualify for state.

Tomorrow is graduation and Benjamin and I will be gone for that and then hit several receptions afterwards.

I also have some VERY exciting news...Aaron and I have BOTH been asked to be a guest designer for Paper Temptress. Aaron for May and myself for May and June.

But even more exciting than that.....I have been after Aaron to draw some images for me that I wanted to enter into a contest. The winner gets their images made into stamps and we (well AARON) won!!! Poor kid! I drew these AWFUL shapes and explained to him how I REALLY wanted them to look. Then he took them and made them perfect! I can't really say more than that, but I am so excited and can't wait to get the sets and create with them.

Farwell to EIO

This is my last month with Embellish It. I have had so much fun being on the EIO design team.

The theme for May is "Spring is in the Air". I made a purse card carrier and some cards. The tutorial for the card carrier can be found on Julie's blog here. I used American Crafts patterned paper. The sentiment is from Lizzie Anne Designs "Say it in Script".Here are 3 cards I've made so far to put inside. I will also be adding envelopes. I'm thinking this will be one of my Mother's Day gifts.

I used a Whipper Snapper image for the flowers and SU! sentiment for this card.For my second card I used a digital image from Shirley's 2 Girls. I love their images and want to get more. I colored the image with copics and used American Crafts papers from Embellish It. For my last card I used an Inky Antic image and PaperTrey sentiment.
